About this report
In September 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an attempt to jointly tackle global challenges. All countries are aiming to make significant improvements to economic prosperity, limiting climate change, protecting natural resources and promoting social participation and equality by 2030. As a responsibly minded, future-oriented family business, the uvex group is playing its part in attaining these global Sustainable Development Goals. Employees from a variety of departments have taken part in a workshop aimed at dealing with all 17 goals. The participants worked together to prioritise which of these goals can be positively advanced through our business activities. Each aspect of sustainability was allocated to a global SDG. Our goal in the area of economic sustainability is “Decent work and economic growth” (SDG 8). To this end, we seek to secure value-oriented growth by maintaining our independence from banks. In the future, innovations should also increasingly help offer possible solutions to the expected shortages of resources. Additionally, our mission of “protecting people” applies to our employees who help to make uvex successful and to whom we want to be a safe and attractive employer around the world.
Ecological sustainability means increasing energy efficiency as well as optimising the use of materials and replacing harmful substances with the development and production of more environmentally friendly products for “responsible consumption and production” (SDG 12). Social sustainability refers to the area of employees and society. Our mission of “protecting people” should “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” (SDG 3). We also invest in supporting a healthy work-life integration, vocational and further training as well as equal opportunities and diversity. Social commitment, above all for disadvantaged children, is the purpose and driving cause behind the Rainer Winter Foundation. The Sustainability Report 2018/2019 also details activities pursued in the areas of ecology, economy and community. In addition, it lists sustainability measures taken at the uvex group's manufacturing plants.
No significant organisational changes have been made during the reporting period (Financial Year 2018/19). The comparability of data from the reporting period against that recorded in the prior financial year is guaranteed by way of appropriate period delimitations, while individual deviations from the previous report are clarified.

The consolidated financial statements and group management report of the uvex group are audited by the audit firm Rödl & Partner GmbH in line with the relevant and applicable legal requirements. Furthermore, the uvex group did not conduct a separate audit for the Sustainability Report 2014, the updates in 2015, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 as well as the current Sustainability Report 2018/2019.
Following the close of the reporting period for financial year 2018/2019, the uvex group has strategically paved the way towards placing a more distinct focus on the circular economy in relation to the product portfolio. The aim here is to combine the high demand for quality in products for protecting people with optimised durability and a recycling concept. Manufacturing expertise forms the foundation for sustainable products, from the initial idea to research and development, all the way through to the end product. For example, a concept for the future of paint production is being developed to make this more environmentally friendly and to reduce the amount of solvents used.
Since 2014, energy procurement at uvex has been on the basis of CO2-neutral electricity and gas. Moreover, a greater focus will now be placed on self-sufficiency and regenerative energies in terms of energy supply. To this end, uvex is examining the possibility of installing solar panels and CHP systems at several locations.
